About this deal

L'inizio era molto invitante, bella l'atmosfera natalizia e l'idea della casa di campagna misteriosa.

If they do not fool themselves into the assumption that they are God-fearing idealists, they will never get the millions who must pay for their damage to believe the same thing, and they will lose the war. Several incidents keep the unexpected houseguests busy and engaged, and Farjeon's plotting has a similar effect on the reader. It's even more impressive when we consider that it's about 11pm on Christmas Eve, David doesn't have a flashlight, there are no street lights, and of course there can't be any moonlight because in a steady blizzard there's total cloud cover. In some ways I find it hard to pin down why the second half didn’t work for me quite so well as I presumed it would.

The train’s original departure point doesn’t really make any difference to the rest of the story though. Yes, at times the dialogue is a little corny, and some of the happenings a bit predictable but still so much fun and I just loved this trip to the past. Robert Davies, from British Library Publishing, said: "For years, publishers have been concentrating on dark, violent, psychological crime novels, but we spotted a gap in the market for readers seeking escapist detective fiction with superb plots and period atmosphere. The denouement was a bit unsatisfying and if not for the fabulous setting and set up and a steady dose of humour throughout (Lydia, really saved it), I'd have maintained a more negative view of the whole.Farjeon provides a superior example of the Old Dark House genre, this time with snow, that will remind readers with long memories of his play No. Obviously in this book the train journey is only the start of the adventure, but I’m keen to see if that is true for other books in the series. Indeed the whole story is handled lightly, with lots of wit and plenty of superb observation of the charmingly ill-assorted characters.

On a train bound for Manchester a group of mismatched travellers band together when the loco gets stuck in an impenetrable snowdrift. Of course it has a snow bound train, an abandoned house and a random bunch of strangers stranded together , intrigued? Twisted Christmas: The story is set on Christmas, and the holiday plays an important part of events in the present and in the backstory of the plot. British Library’s Poisoned Pen Press has been steadily bringing back Golden Age mystery novels, including two, thus far, by J.THE first thing David did on emerging from the front door was to pitch head first into a mound of snow. Ich habe permanent mitgerätselt und Theorien aufgestellt, die am Ende jedoch durch eine tolle und komplexe Aufklärung durchweg wiederlegt wurden. However, that is also it’s undoing as the reader’s expectations are unceremoniously crushed by the second half.

The difference is that Mitchell provides both an acerbic commentary on the conventions of cosy elements and an intriguing mystery puzzle that fulfills the expectations of the genre. But in the white-out, all they find are a series of ditches, and eventually a house—its door unlocked, tea boiling on the stove, fireplace roaring with warmth, and not a soul around to answer them. Fair story - if rather drawn out and repetitive - with several murderers off camera and not really any ghosts.

I’m fascinated to look in more detail at how they feature in stories, in particular crime fiction, and how accurately they are portrayed. As the year closes, I'm still getting in mysteries with snow and Christmas themes and Mystery In White seemed a good choice. There are several more titles in the British Library Crime Classics series that I plan to share with you over the next few month.
