About this deal

The Votann army has had a somewhat controversial first year among 40k fans, starting off so powerful some tournament organisers banned them outright – before suffering a major nerf that soured some fans on the army. The book contains a variety of stratagems and relics, as well as 6 warlord traits and 6 psychic powers. The sprue also builds special character Ûlthar the Destined, who has his own specific head and back crest, and carries the Blade of the Ancestors, a sword. Like the other 40k factions still without a 10th edition codex, there’s only one Leagues of Votann detachment on offer: Oathband.

All of the named leagues come with three rules each, a warlord trait, a relic and a stratagem specific to that league. The sheer lunacy of the massive, super-heavy armour and whacking-great weapons we had with the Einhyr Champion and the Ûthar the Destined/Kâhl miniatures has been toned down a little. The Leagues have their own almost raypunk-style look that couldn’t be more removed from the steampunk-inspired Kharadon. First, there's the Greater Thurian League, the largest League and most mercenary, who offer battle benefits like counting as two models when determining objective control. Watch that you don't get outmaneuvered by your opponent, as they can feel a bit slow on the table, but don't be afraid to stick them in the thick of the fight and force your opponents to meet them head-on.There have been some phenomenal Ûthar the Destined miniatures painted up by GW’s favourite influencers and painters in the hobbysphere. Void Armour might not be the mega-powerful, faction-wide passive survivability buff it was in 9th edition – but worsening incoming attacks’ AP is crucial to protect your elite infantry (and even your tanks, in a pinch), so you’ll find this 1CP is a regular staple. The largest League and the main one in their background is the Greater Thurian League, this is the league from which the only named character High Kahl Uthar the Destined hails from. There are also rules for Escher Cutters , and the dramatis personae Lady Haera Helmawr, Athera , Gorshiv Hammerfist, and Vespa ‘Minx’ Merdena .

This new book details the events taking place on Necromunda where the noble house is under attack, and you can choose to fight for or against them. So if you aren’t playing as the Greater Thurian League and just want to have a cool Kâhl to lead your army…you can build him however you want. As you can see in the image above, there are a few more bits, too: transfer sheets, datacards, a punchboard of tokens, as well as the new faction’s codex. Necromunda’s Squat population are descendants of an entirely distinct, non-Imperial, space-faring culture that provided technicians to the Imperium to help rebuild Necromunda in the aftermath of the Horus Heresy. Competitive play aside, though, the Leagues of Votann are a pretty balanced, accessible army to play, with some flavorful, distinctive model options, and (surprisingly, for a semi-reboot of an old army) some really cool, original fluff to back them up.Objectives that the unit claims remain claimed even after they move off it, continuing a pattern of 10th edition battleline units having strong interactions with scenario victory conditions. It’s not a bad release by any stretch of the imagination – there’s still a huge amount of stuff here that will make a lot of people very happy – but much like Ûthar the Destined’s head, there are one or two cracks around the edges. Whilst this is primarily a resource intended to contain all the rules for playing with the new Squats units, it’s filled with enough brand-new art and enough background info to keep folks just interested in collecting the figures intrigued. Dangerous, mean, and really tough to make a dent in – particularly if you can’t actually see them for the ton of judgement tokens you may find yourself drowning in.
