Because of that comparison in my head I didn’t feel this book shone as much as it could have; if I hadn’t already read Vicky Angel I may have enjoyed this more. She leaves it lying on the kitchen table innocently, knowing that Ruby in particular is likely to grab at it.

Richard - no doubt named so for being a prize dick - is one of the most selfish parents in the Wilson-verse. It's a short book and quick to read, so it was the first of the books I got this Christmas, that I decided to read. Since the death of their mother, the girls have become closer than ever, safe in their closed little world.

I imagine it is something that to an 11 year old probably feels like one of the biggest things that has happened to them and this book covered that subject in a realistic way. If the twins become TV actors, they'll spend a good chunk of the summer holidays away filming, which will act as a temporary measure until she figures out how to get rid of them permanently. She does not let herself be around Garnet for the whole summer, and even though they both feel as though they are missing something, Ruby is too proud to apologise while Garnet wishes she was able to. JACQUELINE WILSON is an extremely well-known and hugely popular author who served as Children's Laureate from 2005-7. I always thought the point of Double Act was that the prospective step-mother, Rose, is A Nice Person After All, and that that was what the reader was supposed to discover along the way with the twins.

But when Dad finds a new girlfriend everything in the twins’ lives is turned upside down–new home, new school, new everything. She gets deals with real things many kids go through on a daily basis, in an easy to understand way and accessible way. Garnet however is very scared, and is about to deliver a good audition but their father appears just as she is about to begin, and she cannot say anything. Double Act won the prestigious Smarties Medal and the Children’s Book Award as well as being highly commended for the Carnegie Medal. The two have always been close despite their differences—Ruby is sociable and dreams of being an actress, while introverted Garnet is content to let Ruby dominate their relationship. It was a believable storyline that addresses many different subject matters through the twin’s diary entries. His form of selfishness is just a bit more subtle than the likes of Sue from Diamond Girls, or Tracy Beaker's mum Carly. They sit the entrance exam, but Ruby is disgusted by Garnet's descripted and mature writing but remains confident they will both pass.
