About this deal

I didn’t want to come to your England, but my mami pulled out her greatest trick of all, even more powerful than guava pastries and other common Cuban heartbreak remedies. The company recently wrapped production on the feature Loveboat, Taipei, based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by Abigail Hing Wen. With a bright new future suddenly on the horizon, will Lila leave behind everything she's ever planned and follow her heart?

I read it as an eBook, which doesn’t help the story to stick in my head though (several months later anyway…). It’s full of sweetness (with not too much sugar), a top notch romantic relationship, letting go friendships, but forming new ones, and tons of cooking and baking.

However, something about this book just didn't wow me the way that it seems to have wowed everyone else? But after her Abuela passes, her boyfriend breaks up with her and her best friend up and leaves without telling her, Lila has no other choice but to follow her families wishes and, for the sake of her sanity and health, go to her family friend’s inn to get a relaxing break away from the stress she’s been under. Towards the end of the book, another line goes "I can be Cuban in Miami, Africa, or London" *face-palm*. It started out so well and if the author didn't do what she did with Africa, I'd recommend this book to everyone. I'll read almost anything--contemporary fiction, the classics, fantasy, historical fiction, horror, adult, young adult, middle grade.

After losing her grandmother, her best friend and her boyfriend in the matter of a couple of months, Lila’s mental health take a deep dive and her parents decide to send her to England for the summer, to live with some family friends in a small inn in Winchester. It’s always scary recommending/gifting a book to someone, since you want them to enjoy what you give them, and this couldn’t have turned out any better! A Cuban Girl’s Guide To Tea and Tomorrow has a lovely place for romance and… damn if it wasn’t perfectly paced. But overall, what makes this novel such a thoughtful read is how its a story about overcoming grief and figuring out the next step.

The connection between Lila and Orion was the star of the show, a sweet and innocent relationship that blossomed from a friendship to more, something so fragile and strong about it at the same time. BookBrowse seeks out and recommends the best in contemporary fiction and nonfiction—books that not only engage and entertain but also deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. I loved that through Lila’s love of Cuban cuisine and pastries, I saw my own Latine culture shine through in the smallest of details: the important role of family in one’s life and all those little moments that just felt recognizable. it's a love story to your family and the places and people that are home, to healing and finding comfort in places and people and food and tradition. Because of her, Pilar and I would never dare board a plane without toting a spare pair of underwear and a change of clothes. In fact, when Orion takes Lila to visit his mother in the dementia facility, it’s all about how traumatic and hard it is for Lila.

I guess her immediate family sort of managed to accidentally dodge the whole thing so of course it doesn’t figure largely in her writing. I can’t talk about the motorbike wind and green and stone I baked into crusty bread and into the baker. She’s very keen to take over the family business – she’ll supervise the baking and her sister, who is graduating from college, will look after the money side. I loved that there was so much care put into developing each of them and their own stories, but you also see how well they fit together. The book is just generally awful for many reasons including the main character is supposed to be 17 but is written more like a 35 year old.
